North Walsham awarded £1.17m from the government’s Getting Building Fund, for its town centre revitalisation project.
The £900m Fund, part of the New Deal for Britain announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson last month, is for “shovel-ready” projects which enable local areas to invest in priority infrastructure projects, driving jobs and growth.
In July, the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership was awarded £32.1m to be spent in the East of England, including an extended Resilience & Recovery Fund to support Norfolk and Suffolk businesses.
MP for North Norfolk, Duncan Baker, said, “Coronavirus has placed immense pressure on the UK, but it has also shown that with vision and determination, we can tackle some of our greatest challenges: building homes, improving the NHS, creating more opportunities for education and employment everywhere, and uniting the country. As the Prime Minister has said, we will build back better, greener, and faster.
“As I’ve seen myself recently through the successful campaign to encourage NNDC to rethink its social distancing plans, North Walsham’s residents, traders, and business owners are united in wanting to see their town bounce back after some challenging times. I’m delighted at the news of this boost from the government: it’s a real testament to the people of North Walsham and I’m proud to support them in building a bright future for the town.”
The funding will be used to make the town centre even more accessible and attractive for a range of commercial and service uses.
