Today I was honoured to speak up in Parliament on behalf of Chris Sutton (former Norwich legend) to raise the profile on the issue of CTE Dementia in professional footballers.
Mr Sutton recently brought to my attention the incredibly distressing fact that former professional footballers are four times more likely to die of CTE Dementia than the wider population due to repeated head impacts.
The Minister assured me that he has been in discussions with the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) regarding the Premier League’s promise to allocate funding towards the new Football Brain Health Fund for players that have been impacted by dementia.
I was also pleased to hear that this fund is only a temporary measure until a proper charity can be established to provide more long term support for players and their families who are suffering from CTE Dementia.
I would like give special thanks to Chris for bringing this to my attention and I will certainly continue to monitor this closely.
