'Reclaim the Rain', a joint initiative by Norfolk and Suffolk County Councils, has been awarded £6.4m by the government's Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme - one of 25 successful schemes across the UK.
The project will test ways of reducing flooding in rural locations, as well as improving resilience to flood and drought in six communities. The results of the pilot projects will be fed back to Defra (Dept for Environment, Farming & Rural Affairs) to inform future work on flood resilience.
The scheme aims to reuse flood water by capturing it and using it as a valuable resource for agriculture, industries, communities, and the environment. Norfolk and Suffolk are in the most water-stressed region of the UK, with East Anglia receiving a third less rainfall than the rest of the UK. In spite of this, both counties face considerable surface-water risk.
