Very busy day in Parliament today but this morning started off with a speech to praise the amazing work of the North Walsham & Dilham Canal Trust volunteers for the incredible work they have done restoring Norfolk’s only locked sailing canal. The canal was originally about 9 miles long and was built by private investors under a Local Act of Parliament passed in 1812. It was built for carrying goods in Norfolk’s Wherry’s originating from or travelling to as far afield as London and the northeast via Great Yarmouth. It served the local community for over 100 years before falling into disuse with the new railways and improvements to the roads which took place, making heavy goods transport easier and faster by road. Then in 2000 enthusiastic volunteers started to restore this waterway into the most beautiful and magical setting you could ever now imagine. In 2008 the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust was formed. The rest as they say is history. Thank you to all the volunteers past and present. To the Chair David Revill and Graham Pressman for your help today. You deserve all the praise you get.
